Thank you for sharing this information. Data privacy and security is an incredibly important topic that needs to be discussed and known to the public.

In my opinion, as many people have their lives on their phones, (including but not limited to credit cards and identification) nobody should have the right to enter your device and view sensitive information without a warrant. You cannot enter someone’s home without a warrant, therefore, you should not be able to enter someone’s device without one as well.

As a Canadian, it concerns me when I think about North American travel. I have since reduced my travel into the US not because I am hiding anything (I’m a terribly boring human being) but for the fact that things like these are beginning to happen.

You mentioned the fact that they can seize your device and not return it for months. That should NOT be allowed. If they figure out a way to keep this “search without a warrant” response, they should have to by law return your electronic device to you before you leave Secondary.

I would love this discussion to continue throughout all platforms. As designers we need to be cognizant of this and be working with law enforcement to ensure the optimal balance between privacy and civilian protection.
